Why extension leads are not a solution
An extension lead or a double adaptor does not create capacity, it just moves the load further from the outlet. Piggy-backed adaptors, leads run under carpet where they get crushed, and outdoor appliances fed from an indoor point through a window are the three arrangements that cause the most trouble in Australian homes.
A permanent outlet on a properly protected circuit costs less than most people expect, and it takes the problem away instead of managing it.
Outdoor power points
Anything outdoors needs a weatherproof outlet with a proper sealed enclosure and RCD protection, whether it is for a pool pump, a workshop, Christmas lights or a barbecue area. This matters more in exposed and coastal parts of Adelaide, where water and salt find their way into the cheap fittings within a season or two.
Common questions
How much does it cost to add a power point?
It depends on how far the new point is from an existing circuit, whether the wall cavity is accessible, and whether the switchboard has capacity. Clay quotes a fixed price on site before starting, and quoting is free.
Can you add a power point without damaging the wall?
In most single-storey homes with roof access, cables can be run through the ceiling and dropped inside the cavity with minimal disturbance. Brick, rendered or double-storey walls sometimes need a small patch, which Clay will point out before any cutting.
Can I get a power point for an air conditioner or EV charger?
Larger appliances generally need their own dedicated circuit rather than sharing an existing one. Ring with the appliance details and Clay will tell you what the switchboard can handle.
My power point is warm or discoloured — is that serious?
Treat it as urgent. Stop using it, switch that circuit off at the board and call. Heat or discolouration at an outlet usually means a loose connection, which is a common cause of electrical fires.
