Rewiring is rarely all-or-nothing. Plenty of houses need one problem area sorted rather than the lot, and staging the work over time is often the sensible approach.

Signs a house needs rewiring
Cabling degrades quietly, so the warnings tend to be indirect:
- The house was built or last wired before the 1970s and has never been touched
- Black rubber or fabric-covered cable visible in the roof space
- Breakers or fuses that trip with no obvious cause
- Very few circuits, with lights and power sharing the same one
- Lights dimming when a large appliance starts
- A burning smell with no obvious source
How a rewire actually runs
The concern people have is living in a construction site for a fortnight. In practice, a domestic rewire is staged: circuits are done in a sequence that keeps the kitchen and at least some power live, cables are run through the roof space and wall cavities where possible to limit patching, and the switchboard is changed over once the new circuits are in.

Renovations and extensions
The cheapest time to do electrical work is while the walls are open. Bring an electrician in at the planning stage and you can put outlets, lighting and data where you will actually want them, instead of accepting where they ended up. Retrofitting after the plaster is on always costs more and never looks as tidy.
Common questions
How long does it take to rewire a house?
It varies with size, access and how much can be run through the roof space. A typical domestic rewire runs across several days. Clay will give you a realistic timeframe with the quote rather than an optimistic one.
Do we have to move out during a rewire?
Usually not. The work is staged so power stays on where possible, though there will be periods with circuits off. That is planned with you in advance.
Can you rewire one part of the house only?
Yes. Partial rewires are common, particularly for kitchens, bathrooms and extensions. New work is brought up to current standards and integrated with what is already there.
Will I get paperwork when it is done?
Yes. Electrical work is tested and a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work is issued, which is worth keeping with your house records and is often asked for at sale time.
