Replacing a light fitting with a fan
Swapping a ceiling light for a fan is the usual request, and it is rarely just a swap. Fans are heavy and they move, so they need a proper mounting point fixed to a ceiling joist or a purpose-made brace — not the plasterboard rose the old light was screwed to. If you want the fan and the light switched separately, that also means a second switch wire.
This is the part that gets skipped on a DIY install and shows up two summers later as a wobble, a rattle, or a fitting that has worked loose. Getting the mount right at the start is most of the job.
Choosing a fan that suits the room
A few things worth knowing before you buy:
- Blade span should match the room — an undersized fan in a large living area just makes noise
- Bedrooms benefit from DC motors, which are noticeably quieter on low speed
- Outdoor areas need a fan rated for outdoor use, even under a roof
- Low ceilings need a low-profile or hugger model to keep safe clearance
- Reversible fans push warm air back down in winter, which is worth having
Common questions
Can you install a fan I bought myself?
Yes. Install-only is common and perfectly fine. Have the box on site and Clay will fit it. If anything in the kit is missing or unsuitable for the mounting point, he will tell you before starting.
Can a ceiling fan go where a light currently is?
Usually, but it needs a secure mounting point fixed to the ceiling structure rather than the plasterboard. That is assessed on the day and is included in the quote.
How long does an installation take?
A straightforward replacement is generally under an hour. A new fan into a room with no existing point takes longer because the wiring and switching have to be run.
Can I have the fan and light on separate switches?
Yes, as long as there is a spare wire in the switch drop or a remote is used. Clay will check what is there and explain the options before quoting.
